Position: Controller (CPA)

This position leads the accounting team, coordinates external audits, and delivers financial insights that support organizational decision-making and long-term stability.


PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Direct all general accounting activities, including month-end and year-end close, general ledger maintenance, journal entries, account reconciliations, and preparation of audit-related materials, with an emphasis on process enhancement and efficiency.
  • Ensure adherence to nonprofit accounting standards (ASC 958) and maintain consistency across all programs, entities, and funding sources.
  • Manage accounts payable, accounts receivable, procurement workflows, and cash application, establishing strong controls and coding accuracy.
  • Lead, coach, and support accounting team members, fostering a culture of accuracy, accountability, and continuous improvement. Establish scalable procedures that align with organizational growth.
  • Deliver accounting expertise to support budgeting and forecasting, translating technical matters into clear, actionable guidance for leadership.
  • Strengthen and maintain internal controls across all financial activities, ensuring segregation of duties and identifying areas of financial or operational risk.
  • Oversee payroll general ledger activity and reconcile payroll- and benefits-related accounts.
  • Manage external audit processes, including the Single Audit and other required financial reviews such as workers' compensation and accounts receivable audits.
  • Oversee preparation of Form 990 and ensure all organizational tax filings (income, sales, property) are completed accurately and on schedule.
  • Lead initiatives to enhance and automate accounting and reporting workflows, improving efficiency and transparency.
  • Maintain and regularly update departmental documentation, procedures, and policies.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Chief Financial Officer.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Active CPA REQUIRED
  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or Business Administration required; MBA preferred.
  • At least 10 years of progressively responsible accounting experience, including leadership and supervisory roles; nonprofit experience strongly preferred.
  • Extensive knowledge of GAAP and compliance requirements applicable to nonprofit organizations.
  • Demonstrated success in redesigning and improving financial close processes, including automation and system enhancements.
  • Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
  • Effective leadership capabilities with a commitment to developing staff.
  • Ability to collaborate across departments and maintain high accuracy under deadlines.
  • Strong ethical judgment and strict confidentiality with sensitive financial information.

TECHNICAL SKILLS

  • Proficiency with accounting systems and Microsoft Office applications, with advanced Excel skills.
  • Experience with enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems (NetSuite experience preferred) and payroll system integrations (such as ADP General Ledger Interface).
  • Ability to utilize business intelligence tools to support financial reporting and analysis.

Salary: $175k - $250k DOE
